Yard Fest!

Mark your calendar: It's Yard Fest 2004, Saturday May 1, from 10 am to 7 pm at Steve White's Folk Farm in Albuquerque, NM. Food, music and more outsider artists than you can shake a stick at. Generally speaking you don't want to go around shaking sticks at outsider artists, but I've been to Yard Fest and they're a really nice bunch of people. If you're anywhere in the Southwest, stop by and say hi.

The University of Minnesota ("A Darn Good Education at a Reasonable Price, Dontcha Know") hosts this wonderful archive of social-hygiene posters from the early part of the last century through the '60s. Even in those less-enlightened times, I suspect, prostitutes might have balked at being described as "bags of trouble."

If you're looking for handprinted letterpress artwork of great American soul and country musicians -- and who isn't? -- you gotta be looking at Knoxville's Yee-Haw Industries, where the name is just the tip of the iceberg of tasty pop-culture goodness. According to their web site, "Like a fat lady on a slop jar, Yee-Haw Industries has been covering America with unique, art-like products since 1996." And every one's a winner. I am at this moment making a gurgling "I want this" sound in the back of my throat as I look at the Complete Large Super-Soul Series. This is great, great stuff.
